BREAKING NEWS:
There’s a battle going on. ‘Of course there is,’ you will say. ‘The Middle East is a war zone. It’s all over the Tele.’
TRUE, but the battle is at a deeper level:
• between those people who are clear thinking, compassionate, nature-based with a strong belief in humanity’s potential AND
• those who have a sense of self entitlement in enriching themselves with the continued production of fossil fuels and a hatred of others outside their immediate privileged group.
WHO WILL WIN THIS DEEPER BATTLE AND HOW LONG WILL THE BATTLE LAST?
The problem is, we don’t have a lot of time before the actions of this second group of people in facilitating man-made Global Warming will result in a series of disasters which will engulf not only this group but the rest of us.
Currently long-term, average warming is between 1.3° to 1.4°C above preindusterial levels, 2024 was the first calendar year to breach the target limit at 1.55°C increase. Key impacts include accelerating sea-level and river flooding, severe droughts with crop failures and the decimation of forests by wildfires, polar ice melt, and the expansion of diseases.
Central Europe suffered severe floods in September 2024, impacting over 250,000 people across Germany, Poland, Czechia, and Romania whilst in 2025 Pakistan experienced devastating monsoon-driven floods with nearly one-third of the country being submerged
In 2024, over 44 million acres burned in the Brazilian Amazon whilst in 2025 California fires burned over 525,000 acres across the state.
In the UK, winters are warmer and wetter, subject to intense rainfall and storms with summers are characterised by heatwaves with increased risk of drought, water shortages and wildfires.
WHAT WE GONNA’ DO?
There was a poignant moment towards the end of COP30 last year when one young female delegate from Columbia, Daniella Duran Gonzalez pointed out to the COP President that her group’s objection to the exclusion of a fossil fuel phase-out from the final agreement had been ignored.
The process ground to a halt and further discussions were held. Yet despite this, there was still no reference to fossil fuels in the final agreement. However, the COP President did say that during 2026 prior to COP31, he would launch an international search to create a Roadmap to Phase Out Fossil Fuels.
In addition, Columbia has joined forces with the Netherlands to launch a Conference for the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels to be held in Santa Marta, Colombia this April. Those invited will include national and local governments, academics, Indigenous Peoples, civil society workers and companies in the private sector. It is intended to support practical action by those already prepared to move forward to accelerate a just, orderly, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels
Young people, inspired by Greta Thunberg, are aware that their futures are at stake and taking action in many ways including demonstrating in support of tackling climate change and also attempting to get humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The MeToo movement is starting to have an impact on the toxic, ultra-rich males who have abused women with the prosecution of Weinstein, Epstein and the proceedings against Prince Andrew. The continuing release of the Epstein files promises to reveal and discredit many other toxic men including members of the US government who are also climate deniers.
In Russia, the suppression of any dissent appears impregnable but there are indications that in certain regions of Siberia a Climate Change protest movement is emerging as a result of the rapid melting of permfrost leading to flooding, damage to crops and also wildfires. There is also marked opposition to the enforced recruitment of men to fight in Ukraine who are given little training and suffer high casualty rates.
China is a curious case in being an extreme dictatorship but at the same time a leading researcher and producer of renewable fuels e.g a state-of-the-art electric car industry which it exports to the world - an example to other nations and companies that developing the production and use of renewable fuels is highly profitable.
A MIXED BAG OF CRISES AND OPPORTUNITIES. LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVES.
